Some jobs look simple on the surface but have a lot going on underneath. This one was a good example of that. The homeowner needed a solid concrete pad poured for a Kohler standby generator, and the surrounding grade needed to be addressed with a proper retaining wall to keep water moving away from the structure - not toward it.
Here's what we were working with: a mountain property with natural grade changes, large boulders already on site, and a generator that needed a stable, level foundation to sit on for the long haul. Skipping the prep work might look fine for a season, but it catches up with you fast - especially on a property like this where the ground moves with freeze-thaw cycles every year.
We poured a clean concrete pad with gravel drainage worked into the surrounding base. Then we set the boulder retaining wall to hold the grade and direct water away from the foundation. The boulders aren't just functional - they fit the character of the property and look like they belong there. That's the goal with any retaining wall we build.
Good drainage is honestly one of the most underrated parts of any outdoor project. It's not the flashy stuff, but it's what keeps everything intact years down the road. Whether it's a retaining wall, a patio, or a hardscape installation near a structure, we think through water movement every single time.
Projects like this are a good reminder that prep and drainage do most of the heavy lifting. Get those two things right, and everything else holds up the way it should.
